Preface

ATP 3-01.18 provides guidance for Stinger team employment techniques supporting air defense operations. Its focus is to build a proficient Stinger team enabling them to accomplish their assigned missions. The effectiveness of Stinger varies directly with the individual skills of each team member and their collective proficiency. This manual provides the non-prescriptive ways or methods used by the Stinger team to engage and destroy hostile air threats.

The principal audience for ATP 3-01.18 is commanders, staffs, supervisors, planners, and Soldiers.

ATP 3-01.18 applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated.

Introduction

ATP 3-01.18, Stinger Team Techniques, presents the Stinger air defense weapon system that provides low- level air defense coverage to the combined arms forces. Each chapter and appendix addresses the employment of Stinger missile system. The employment of Stinger teams is an option available to commanders that ensures the continued air defense coverage to the maneuver forces.

ATP 3-01.18 contains five chapters and a supporting appendix that includes employment, detection, identification, and engagement techniques. The chapters are:

Chapter 1 discusses the role of Stinger teams, employment guidelines, and mission command. It introduces the operator to the different considerations of Stinger engagements during combined arms employment.

Chapter 2 discusses Stinger team employment and operational techniques.

Chapter 3 discusses Stinger team communications.

Chapter 4 discusses Stinger team engagement operations.

Chapter 5 discusses Stinger missile firing procedures.

Appendix A discusses aircraft detection and identification techniques.

This book is a "mini" (half the size of a regular sheet of paper) size - A popular size to carry anywhere (briefcase, large pocket, purse) but the print is large enough for easy reading.  The binding is with coil, allowing easy flipping of pages without jamming.
